Field Notes

Description:

Belongs to the family of Rosaceae. The berries are edible and have a sweet taste. However, leaves, bark and pits of the berries contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can cause gastrointestinal disorders (bellyache).

Habitat:

Sunny and dry mountain ranges, prefers limestone. Also found in open oak and pine forests. In the alps it can be found until altitudes of 2000 meters a.s.l.
