Field Notes

Notes:

Seen crossing the highway somewhere between Augathella and Tambo in central Queensland. I was driving merrily along, when my husband said, "You just ran over a bunch of giant fluffy caterpillars." I said, "You are kidding me!" We went back to have a look, and there they were, crossing the road in a bunch... except for the ones I had squashed. : ( The last two shots show the location - we were in the middle of flat, open, grassy fields with barely a tree or bush in sight. I have no idea what they might be.

Hi Leuba! I cropped the squashed ones out!!! (They were on the other side of the road, the others had already made it nearly to the other verge.) I've added a couple of pics of where we stopped so you can see what I mean. There are a couple of scrubby bushes visible, but none very close by.
you say it was wide open, flat, grassy fields with not a bush in sight - how could you have not seen these monsters !?? I love pic #2 - where are the squashed ones?? sorry, Shanna - I think they are Arctiidae, as you might have guessed. I have so many of these unidentified myself - will look for you - a nice change after all the fungi !
