Field Notes

Description:

The coconut palm is one of the most widely cultivated tropical plants species, with a total production of around 61 million tonnes per year of coconut. The highly water resistant and positively bouyant coconut seeds, especially suited for dispersion via water currents is thought to be part of the reason for the coconut palms global distribution, however travelling seafarers have also had a significant contribution.

Habitat:

Tropical climate, sandy soils - highly salinity tolerant.

Notes:

Every single part of the coconut palm has a commercial use - in the Northern hemisphere the coconut meat or copra is probably the most well known.
