Field Notes

Description:

The Osprey is a fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large raptor, reaching 24 in (60 centimeters) in length with a 40 in (2 m) wingspan. In appearance, it has dark brown upper parts, white underparts, a white head, black eyes with dark crown. There are dark patches under the wings.

Habitat:

Eats fish and nests in any location near a body of water with an adequate food supply. Lives on every continent except Antarctica.

Notes:

I saw this magnificent bird in a tree at my family's summer/beach house on the Pettaquamscutt (a.k.a Narrow) river in Saunderstown, RI. It is fairly common over there around Narragansett Bay.
