Field Notes

Description:

The comma butterfly has a distinctive ragged edge. Orange with brown markings and a whitish/yellow fringe.

Habitat:

Europe and temperate Asia to Japan and south to Morocco. Similar species are found in the United States and Canada.
Spotted here in an alpine meadow, 1400 m above sea level.

Notes:

Like other anglewing butterflies this species survives the winter in the adult stage. Flower is Knautia arvensis, the field scabious.

Alice you were right about it being an anglewing butterfly. I went through the European anglewings and found it in the Nymphalidae: Polygonia c-album, the comma butterfly.
