It seems to happen sometimes for no apparent reason :p Anyway, you are not alone in calling them tiger lilies: check this website http://www.gardenersnet.com/bulbs/tigerlily.htm I'd still stick with "daylily"; the tiger lilies I've known are much more "tiger" colored and have a different stem/leaf conformation.
I realize that the wild version of this in the east is called tiger lily, but it seems most commonly known to gardeners as a daylily. The wild tiger lily we have on the west coast is much smaller, a brighter orange, covered with black spots, and sprouts from a slender upright stem.
