Field Notes

Description:

Female with young staring at my guide and me. The White Rhinoceros is the world's largest land mammal after the three species of elephant. Weight typically ranges from 1,360 to 3,630 kg (3,000 to 8,000 lb), with the male being slightly heavier.

Habitat:

savanna, acacia bush

Notes:

I did a day trip to Hlane Royal national park. I did a walk with a guide in the park. Many of the parks in Africa don't allow much hiking in them, so it was really cool to be on foot. We got to about 80' (25m) of this female with her young before they spotted us. I took some photos and we carried on. We saw more rhinos later near a waterhole.

I did not manage to get to that park, instead I ended up in Mbuluzi Game Reserve in Swazi. Very close to Hlane Royal national park. Fantastic to be able to camp 20 meters from a waterhole where giraffes come to drink... The hyena tracks freaked me out a bit at first though, but hey, I survived :) I would really recommend Swaziland to all of you that are looking for an unique wildlife experience in Africa!
Thanks Tina. Good luck with your hike there this weekend. I'm sure it will be good. We also spotted giraffes on foot during this same hike, which was cool. Really, spotting any large mammal on foot is exciting!
Yes it is a bit nerve wracking to walk in the Swaziland parks and reserves. I walked around in the Mlawula nature reserve last weekend, and even if they said that they had not spotted a leopard in ten years, i am sure I was well observed!!! :) I will be heading to Hlane Royal national park this weekend (but since this is Africa, plans can change quite fast) . I do hope it will be something extraordinary. Nice to see your (old) spottings from there! Best regards Tina
Wow, an experience I long for. Their sheer power must be evident when you look at them face to face!
I've added this one too. It seems like every animal has their day now, that's pretty cool. This was a special spot. First time I've ever spotted a rhino on foot! Definitely a different and more exciting experience than seeing them from the relative safety of a safari vehicle.
Another special spot! The mission is going global today on World Rhino Day, you may add if you like Dan! http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/12848241
