Field Notes

Description:

Very large grasshopper. Maybe 4 inches long. People I was with called it a Longosta. Which I believe means lobster.

Habitat:

Semi-arid tropical forest

Notes:

Saw this guy flying by when I was mountain biking with a bike club in the high country of northeast El Salvador. It watched it, it landed on a tree a ways away, and I ran over keeping my eye on the spot. Found it sitting on a branch, and I caught it so as to have a little photoshoot.

Species ID Suggestions

Giant grasshopper

Tropidacris cristata

This looks like a grasshopper I found in Costa Rica: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/5399007. I had IDed it as Tropidacris cristata, but I haven't found a very good reference anywhere online for it. There's also a species, Tropidacris dux, that seems to look similar.
Yes, langosta means lobster. Love the details!
