Field Notes

Description:

huge hornet, over an inch long

Habitat:

forests and towns

Notes:

I spotted this giant hornet in a flower bed near Oak Hall. It's the largest wasp I've ever seen and the first time I've seen this species here. It's a subspecies of European Hornet. It was introduced to America in the mid 1800's. According to Audobon guide to Insects and Spiders, it's not found in my area. It was nearly dead when I found it and died shortly after.
