Field Notes

Description:

One of Australia's most beloved and recognised icons. However they are now vulnerable due to land clearing, logging, road kills and attacks from domestic dogs. They have woolly grey fur with a white chest, fluffy ears and a naked black nose. They are largely arboreal, only coming to the ground when shifting trees. Their diet consists almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves but can also eat melaleuca and casuarina species. They spend 20-22 hours a day sleeping.

Habitat:

Dry open eucalypt forests, can also be found in suburban areas due to reduced forest habitat.

Notes:

This koala was spotted on my TAFE campus in Alexandra Hills. It was a resident there and could often be seen hanging around. I have volunteered with injured koalas for about 2 years but it is always really nice to see a lovely big healthy wild koala!

No they aren't being hunted but with habitat loss and many being killed on the roads and also a lot of malicious attacks lately they are on the way down =(
The really are just gorgeous! We are so lucky to have them but they might not be around for much longer =(
