Description:

Brown large cap with a simple stem. Habitat conifer woods. Season late summer to late autumn. Uncommon.

Habitat:

Woods by the "Triad" trail East of Jordan Pond, Maine

Sorry, but I did not touch any of the ones we saw at Acadia. Its a National Park and the motto is "Tread Lightly", which implies that any damage to the fauna, flora along with any manmade soil erosion contributes to the demise of the fragile environment allready stressed by millions of visitors. I'm guessing that you are basing the guess of Boletus on its having a sponge. Did it stain when cut? Were the pores small and roundish or large and polygonal? Hopefully someone familiar with mushrooms in your area will recognize this.
