Field Notes

Description:

Some 25 cm in length. Portrayed here is female, mainly brown, with black-and-brown barred primaries and tail.

Breeding male (unfortunately, not seen) is particularly spectacular in flight; during the breeding season it acquires a long, and pennant-like inner primaries. These are white and very long, twice the length of the body itself - and get broken or discarded before the end of the breeding season.

Habitat:

Seen roosting on the ground, near water point in a protected savanna/woodlands of Mukuvisi; outskirts of Harare, Zimbabwe.

Notes:

My friend, Srdjan Cuturilov and I were discussing the ID of this bird several times and, as Srdjan puts it, we are 80% sure that it's the right one...I put this photo on African Bird Club forum for discussion and confirmation; but still got no answers. So, please, feel free to correct us if...

If our ID was correct, that would be the first spotting of this species on NOAH...
