Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized lapwing or plover, a bit short of 30 cm in length. Unmistakable wader, with brown mantle, black belly, chest, crown, nape and throat stripe; rest of the body bright white. Black bill and legs, and red eyes.

Habitat:

Common resident in much of Sahel (northern part of sub-Saharan Africa), not so common in southern Africa; always found near water - I always observed it in pairs or a lone bird; while the literature claims it's usually seen in smaller groups or colonies. Here, on shores of lake Abijjata, in Abijjatta-Shalla National Natural Reserve; consisting of two lakes of the Rift Valley lakes system. This park is on altitude of 1500m and 2000, mainly savanna and open acacia woodland, with other thorny shrubs and euphorbias; very rich in birdlife (over 300 species recorded) but not so much in other wildlife.
