Acer rubrum looks like a keeper. Thanks. Timing of early seed release matches, as well as leaf pics and some other details. That it's the most common maple in SE is a little embarrassing, but now I know...guess that's why I'm here. On to the next one.
This is probably Acer rubrum, Red Maple. It tends to have fairly smooth gray bark even when it's pretty tall. The three lobed leaves are a good identifying feature. Check this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_rubrum. There's a photo of leaves that look much like your photo.
Thanks very much. I'll check out the link.
Acer leucoderme, also known as Chalk Maple or Whitebark Maple. I'm with you Alice, I've never heard of it before but it's not that either. Here's a link though just to check it out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalk_Maple
I have been told it's 'chalk maple' but doesn't look like photos in field guides i have. Thanks for your help. First experience with this app. Great way to prompt attention to nature.
Alice, I don't think this is a tulip tree (Liriodendron) leaf. It might be some type of maple.
