YellowJacket
Dolichovespula arenaria
39.2143, -122.009
Field Notes
Description:
***Yellowjackets have sometimes been mistakenly called "bees", but they are actually in the wasp classification. A typical yellowjacket worker is about 12 mm (0.5 in) long, with alternating bands on the abdomen while the queen is larger, about 19 mm (0.75 in) long (the different patterns on the abdomen help separate various species)
Habitat:
Cactus
Notes:
Although very hot out, these fellows let me get awfully close without so much as flinching. I'm guessing they were newly hatched, or cooling the nest and eggs (?) was more important then me.
