Field Notes

Description:

Mushroom growing singly, umbonate cap, slightly viscid, striate toward edge; stem wider at base (possibly like a volva), cream at top to brown at bottom, annulus. Gills white and free, spore print white. Stains red in spots as it grows old.

Habitat:

Grassy bank, temperate rain forest

Notes:

Very reminiscent of an Amanita but no veil remnants on cap. The red "bruising" is really unique. This is my own drawing of the specimen, but it had aged a couple of days from the time of the in situ photograph. The gill photo was taken a day or so later.
