ok, I understand now. Wikipedia only shows a photo with the head pulled in.
I'm pretty sure Mitch is right on this one. They have a surprisingly long neck; your second photo shows a more typical posture where the neck appears shorter.
now I'm not so sure about green heron, it's neck was a lot longer
thanks Mitch, it was too far away to get a good shot with my camera. I think joining project Noah is going to make me by a DSLR
