Field Notes

Description:

Red head and chest, brown rest of body striped, very light brown beak. As we discovered yesterday, juvenile Cardinals have a darker brown beak and the red is more splotchy on the chest and there is not stripes.

Habitat:

Originally from the West, now common all over. My books say they will eat from feeders (obviously this is true) and drink water from bird baths and bathe there.

Notes:

I hadn't been home five minutes and this bird appeared on my feeder out in my front yard. My book says they are on the rise (as opposed to going extinct).

Ashley spotted one at her place:

Nice photos! Seems like we see them all the time in WV.
Susan, yes, the book I have makes comments about populations on the rise meaning increasing populations and some are getting harder to see by the professional and trained bird people, so those populations are marked as declining or extinct. I think that some scientists and rangers and department of wildlife people and park rangers count birds they find dead too, and some tag their legs to track them, and nest sightings and other ways to track and count populations of birds. Maybe this site will help track if people do good markings on their name labels, dates, times, and locations? Another beneficial effect of Project Noah.
someone got one too: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6633162
you know what? to think of it again... I did see them at migratory period at my back yard and of course I was not interested in taking pictures then...so you are right they are not extinct yet...maybe this yr I will try to get a shot.
Thanks. I did crop it a bit to try to show off the colors and the seed in the mouth.
