Field Notes

Description:

Large. Upper side of male tan to orange with black scales on forewing veins; female tawny, darker than male. Underside of hindwing with wide pale submarginal band and large silver spots.

Habitat:

Open fields, meadows, pastures, dry shale barrens and wet meadows.Flower gardens.

Notes:

This is the most common of the larger fritillaries seen in the mountains. Usually at lower elevations.Similar Species:
Aphrodite Fritillary (mountains)
Atlantis Fritillary (in the Virginias)
