Field Notes

Description:

They have reddish-brown fur on their upper parts with 5 dark brown stripes and contrasting light brown stripes along their backs and light underparts. They have a tawny stripe that goes from their whiskers to below their ears and light stripes over their eyes. They have a dark tail. Like other chipmunks, they transport food in pouches in their cheeks. They have 2 fewer teeth than other chipmunks and have 4 toes each in the front legs but five in the back legs.[4]

Habitat:

Eastern USA, North America.

Notes:

Chipmunks are ground squirrels. This particular chipmunk was raiding the seeds I put out for the birds on a low platform feeder. It was stuffing its mouth full, running to what I presume was a nest, then returning to see if there was any seed left. It made 3 trips back and forth before the other critters finished off the two handfuls of seed.

The last picture also has a Northern Cardinal Male in it. They shared space for a while.

Thanks Ashley. I have been warped by the movies though and expect to hear them break into song whenever I spot them.
