Winged Sumac
Rhus copallinum
34.17, -85.87
Field Notes
Description:
15 foot tall shrub with loose clusters of dark red berries. This sumac is easily identified by unmistakably winged sections of the stems between leaflets.
Habitat:
Sunny hilltop near edge of mixed hardwood and pine forest.
Notes:
Winged sumac is a host plant for Red-banded Hairstreaks, Spring/Summer Azure butterflies, and Luna moths.
The red clusters of berries can be used as a natural dye (high in tannins). Much like the staghorn sumac, these berries can be soaked in water and made into a lemonade-like drink.
