Field Notes

Description:

Pentatomidae, Cyrtocoridae

Notes:

The most interesting thing about this insect is that it turns dark when wet, just like tree bark, and some of its colors actually change, not just darken. Attached is a paper, “Camouflage by Integumentary Wetting in Bark Bugs,” that Bob Silberglied and I wrote about it and another wetable bug in 1980. (Annete Aiello, STRI.)
