probably Azolla http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azolla or Duckweed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemnaoideae most people mistake Azolla for duckweed...and Azolla should be pretty common where you live. If you can get back to the spot scoop some up and look at it under a hand lens.
