Field Notes

Description:

Georgia Aquarium, Tropical Diver main viewing exhibit.

Habitat:

The GA Aquarium exhibit for this particular exhibit had a natural daylight system that was not visible from the viewing area. Behind the scenes, or "up top" there was a huge sunroof with glass windows that were made especially for this exhibit. It allowed in the correct amount and type of light for the exhibit. There was also extra lights as well to increase the lighting. There was a warm temperature up top, and a wave machine and an area that went much farther back than seen below. It was a surface that allowed the wave machine to make the wave and the water to wash over the reef and into a mangrove area with mangroves and several shallow areas that are not visible from below. The idea was to allow for breeding areas and use mangroves for filtration as well. Of course there was mechanical as well as biological filtration in this habitat. Much but not all of the corals were grown specifically for this exhibit, to keep the real coral where it belongs. Some corals are fake while the back up facilities grow more just for this exhibit.
