Field Notes

Description:

We spotted this beautiful sea snake on the beaches of one of the Yasawa Islands in Fiji. It had a tiny, beautiful yellow head, glistening scales and was quite long. Not realising how fatal its poison can be, we stroked it. Fortunately for us, it did not strike! A friendly Fijian (carrying a machete!) warned us not to touch it as he walked past only minutes later. We were surprised to say the least, and were shocked further that night when we heard that these snakes are one of the most venomous in the world and if bitten, there is little or no chance of survival. Death is swift! Suffice to say, I won't be touching any wild creatures without knowing anything about them again!
