Field Notes

Description:

The mallard ducklings from my previous spotting have left the fledgling period and are now juveniles. With a black and orange bill, brown breast feathers and straight tail feathers, it looks to me like this one is a female. Spotted coming out of the water still covered with aquatic plants...

Habitat:

Wetlands. Temperate and subtropical Americas, Europe, Asia, and North Africa; introduced to New Zealand and Australia.

Notes:

Previous spotting is at

Found on a pond 1300m high. Mallards are found up to an altitude of 2000m.

Judging from the Supercillium, it does look like a female. i feel that it is more challenging for the ducklings than it is for the Goslings. The Mallard ducklings are so tiny. Most of the ducklings that I have seen have developed a female plumage.
Wow, I really like this picture.
