Northern Flicker (red-shafted) m.

This is a male Red-shafted Flicker, the western race of the Northern Flicker. The red moustachial stripe indicates that it is a male.
In the second photo a different bird is drumming on the top of a hollow snag, probably to maintain his territory or communicate with his mate.
