They grow in open areas of the forest and on the banks of rivers.

That's an Elephant Ear plant. It could be in the genus Xanthosoma, Colocasia, Alocasia or Caladium! I'm guessing it's a Caladium: http://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/index.php/Caladium
