Field Notes

Description:

This flower blooms with a short life span. I captured some of the seed pods and the whole plant with the long slender leaves. It is the dry season.

Habitat:

Shady areas on the high plateau here in Madagascar. Partly shaded areas. Can grow in poor soil once established.

Notes:

I first noticed this plant on June 4th and have been waiting for the blooms.
Origin is in East Africa, Malawi and Tanzania.

Now that I look at it it is purplish. Funny how memory fades.
Hi, I think I have seen them here, I took this photo http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/5745089 They sell them in the summer in retail stores such as Lowe's and Home depot in the summer, I have only seen them in the US since 1999. I wonder if it is the same as yours over in Africa?
I was quite surprised to find this flower and after living here for so long!
Thanks, alicelongmartin. I had no idea where to start, but thanks to you I now know. It sure is a pretty flower.
