Thanks for these suggestions - I've looked up the references you both suggested and I'm now sure that it is a Desmodium
Look alike Teramnus labialis small climber plant.
It's a species of Desmodium or Tick Trefoil. They can be really difficult to I.D. at the species level. It will get little bean-like pods covered with tiny bristles that break apart into segments and stick tight to fur or clothing when something brushes against them, which is why they're called tick trefoils.
