Notes:

I believe this is a whiptail. Perhaps a western whiptail, based on pictures and descriptions that I was able to find on the internet, but I really am not sure. Spotted in Grand Junction, CO near the Colorado National Monument at about 3pm. The temperature was 100 degrees Fahrenheit. It was very active. It caught and ate several small insects while I was taking pictures.

It appears to be the Painted Desert Whiptail, Cnemidophorus tigris septentrionalis, a subspecies of Western Whiptail.
