There were several of these swimming together. They were quite large, about 3 or so feet in length.

This is definitely a barracuda :) Looks most likely to be the great barracuda, which you get a lot around Hawaii. The scientific name for that is Sphyraena barracuda. Could you update the spotting with the correct info please? They are fantastic fish! I saw a huge shoal when I was diving once, about 100 of them... it was breath taking, but it was unfortunately before I got an underwater camera!!
