Field Notes

Description:

Unknown type of water turtle, most likely an Eastern Painted Turtle as indicated by the yellowish markings on its head. Related Resource: http://www.virginiaherpetologicalsociety.com/reptiles/turtles/eastern-p… Editor's Note: I shot the photo using an iPhone 3GS camera that does not feature an optical zoom lens, therefore the photo shows modest detail. Nonetheless, I encourage spotters to speculate regarding the type of turtle shown in the photo. Editor's Note: My sincere thanks to the commenters who offered ID suggestions! I used the Friends of Huntley Meadows Park "Reptiles and Amphibians" species list to aid my tentative identification. http://www.friendsofhuntleymeadows.org/Species%20Lists/amphimammal/amph…

Habitat:

Huntley Meadows Park, a 1,425 acre wetland area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntley/

Species ID Suggestions

Coastal cooter (Pseudemys concinna floridana) Hard to ID from the photo and the listing photos are not much better. They do look close. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudemys_concinna_floridana
That is one muddy turtle. =) I'd guess something in the subfamily deirochelyinae but beyond that I have no idea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deirochelyinae
