This is a fishing spider.
Definitely not a brown recluse. They have a violin shape on their back though because they are very small it's sometimes difficult to make out. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7198192 As the name suggests, they are pretty reclusive & tend to hang out in basements & other out of the way places so you would be unlikely to find one on a tree in daylight.
Looks more like a fishing spider. http://www.google.ca/imgres?q=fishing+spider&hl=en&sa=X&qscrl=1&nord=1&rlz=1T4GGHP_enCA412CA412&biw=1280&bih=796&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=kn6QFLLiL96eVM:&imgrefurl=http://www.whatsthatbug.com/2007/05/02/fishing-spider-17/&docid=rixIqvD6SuRdmM&imgurl=http://www.whatsthatbug.com/images/dolomedes_louisiana.jpg&w=216&h=278&ei=OwjcTsaOAoLt0gGPjNT-DQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=3921&sig=109338782315048419808&page=5&tbnh=128&tbnw=108&start=97&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:97&tx=76&ty=89
