Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized (4cm) brown butterfly with very distinctive "bulls eye" circles on the wings and scalloped lines along the edges of the wings.

Habitat:

Flying among sedges and shrubby growth along edge of wetland.

Notes:

There were several of them constantly moving and none stayed still for more than a second or two. When they landed, they always kept their wings closed so I couldn't get a picture of the top side but I'm fairly sure of the identification as the underside markings are so clear (habitat and behaviour also matches my Peterson Guides listing).
