Field Notes

Description:

The bee was a skinny bee, not like the honey bees I'm used to seeing at lower elevations.

Habitat:

We were taking pictures of the Mountain Magnolia and spotted this bee going to each flower.

Notes:

At the Lenn Foote Inn, accessible from Amicolola Falls State park via a 5 mile hike at the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, there is a bee hive house that they keep for conservation and educational purposes.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

Your description as a "skinny bee" leads me to think it could actually be a hover fly in the family Syrphidae. Unfortunately the photo is far enough away that a definitive ID of the insect is nearly impossible. Sorry.
