Habitat:

It was growing on the ground, among gravel and small rocks.

Thank you Whitney. I didn't touch the top of it, but it was 3 to 4m far from the trees. The soil was mainly rocks or sort of gravel. Maybe a root hidden under it, but I don't think so. There was a river 10m away
Was it soft on top? Where there any trees nearby that this could have been growing off the roots of? It looks like it could be a velvet top fungus. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/phaeolus_schweinitzii.html
