Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized boldly patterned plover/lapwing, striking bird easily recognized by large pendulous yellow wattles. Brown coat and white underparts are dominant colors, with black flanks. Head and neck are grey, with white crown. Legs and eyes yellow, the bill yellow with black tip.

Habitat:

I've seen this pair on a temporary sandbanks on river Congo, in June 2013.

Notes:

In that season, many temporary islands form on Congo near Kinshasa; and they become a paradise for a birdwatcher... These two beauties were a lifer for me (like many other species at that time... ); and I was really impressed seeing them - especially by their walk, it looked almost like a choreographed dance (photos 1 to 5) ...

More special African treasures from you Zlatan! Thanks. These are truly spectacular birds. The other three spottings we have for these were from Zambia and Botswana.
Ziatan...excellent spotting and photography!
