Field Notes

Description:

It looks like excrement, but inside there is the larva of the Warty Leaf Beetle The female lays her eggs on a host pant and then uses her fecal material to form a case around it. When the larva emerges from the egg it continues to use its waste to build the case. Prior to pupating, the larva will seal the case closed. After about 20 days the adult emerges from the case.

This is a great spotting! I've always noticed them, but thought they were galls or bat poo:)
Yes - it is pretty gross when you know what it is! But I'm with you...I've touched worse:)
I think I found one of these. I had it in my hand. Ew. LOL! (I have touched worse)
