Field Notes

Description:

"Squirrel monkey fur is short and close, colored olive at the shoulders and yellowish orange on its back and extremities. Their throat and the ears are white and their mouths are black. The upper part of their head is hairy...Squirrel monkeys grow to 25 to 35 cm, plus a 35 to 42 cm tail. Male squirrel monkeys weigh 750 to 1100 g. Females weigh 500 to 750 g."

Habitat:

"Squirrel monkeys live in the tropical forests of Central and South America in the canopy layer." I found this monkey in the Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica

Notes:

This squirrel monkey was quick and I followed it as it walked across the wires before jumping back into a tree and disappearing. Great leapers!

I love the 3rd photo! They can jump so far!
These little devils came down on the beach and took our things when we were in the Manuel Antonio area 6 years ago. Wish I had a better camera back then.
Carolina, the third photo might be my favorite photo of the entire trip! I just love how it catches the playful nature of this monkey. You can also see the human impact with the telephone wires running through the canopy. I never got close enough to confirm if they smelled like spray tan, haha! Next time! :)
You gotta love the third photo! I love Saimiris, they are really fun and friendly, and they have such a beautiful face, but I don't know why they smell like spray tanning to me.
Thanks Jonathan! I've updated the spotting. I'm finally uploading more of my photos from Costa Rica :)
