15.4561, 119.921
Field Notes
Habitat:
This Luzon Grass Dart was spotted, in our backyard vegetable plot, on a Jute plant which had sprouted up amongst our Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus).
Notes:
Hesperiidae; Hesperiinae; Taractrocera luzonensis luzonensis Staudinger,1889. According to Wikipedia, the species Taractrocera luzonensis is present throughout much of Southeast Asia, including Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi and neighbouring islands as well as the Philippines. However, the subspecies, shown here, is Taractrocera luzonensis luzonensis which Wiki says is present only in the Philippines. That would make this ssp. endemic to the Philippines, but in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_butterflies_of_the_Philippines#He…..... . Taractrocera luzonensis luzonensis is not labelled as Endemic. It is confusing, but I think the Wiki article is correct and the Wiki List of Butterflies of the Philippines is wrong. My reason is that the Wiki article mentions the Species and then goes on to mention all six Subspecies whereas the List of Butterflies of the Philippines mentions Taractrocera luzonensis stella which is present only in Borneo. If there is one mistake in the list, there will probably be more. It is difficult enough to learn, even when all of the information available is correct, but when there are conflicting statements, it becomes impossible. :-)
