First time I saw one I thought it was a scorpion, it was so big. But no, just an earwig! Now, I see them scurrying away from the bottom of potted plants when I move the pots and in the compost pile, when I move or shovel the pile.
These are very common in some parts of BC. We used to see them when we were camping in the Okanagan of BC. When they are around, you need to put all your food in containers so that they do not get into it! They may be harmless, but who wants them in your food:)
Hi Susan I have seen these before in different parts of the east coast. It is nice learning new things. Thanks again Dan.
Thank you Dan. I have heard of this insect before. And yes it is harmless. I am sitting by it right now.
Thanks for the correction...you are a good teacher. I always learn from you...anyway, it is quite unusual..never witnes one in my lifetime.
Those aren't fangs Susan. Those are the pincer like cerci, they are very curved in males. They are used in defense and also to fold the soft fan shaped hind wings beneath the short forewings. Earwigs look dangerous but are harmless.
