Two-lined Salamander
Eurycea bislineata
39.1271, -84.2445
Field Notes
Description:
Moist dark skin with golden markings and dark lines down the side. I believe it is a female; the males have a fleshy hook that overhangs their upper lip, almost like a mustache.
Habitat:
Found this little guy at the Cincinnati Nature Center in Avey's Run (a shallow stream).
Notes:
Noticed that some of the salamanders were missing parts of their tails. It is a defense mechanism. Also the one I found looks more like a northern two-lined than a southern one. I was definitely south (close to Kentucky) so I'm nor 100 percent sure if this a two-lined one or not. Any suggestions?
