Description:

Yellow, tubular flower that opens up exposing the center. This is native and endemic to California.

Habitat:

Endemic to California. Found on hiking trail in dry chaparral area.

Hi Scott, yes the petals are all from the same plant. It appears some are just opening up. I agree it looks like a Mariposa. Wish it was still flowering so I could take more photo's. Thank you for the suggestion. If there aren't any others, I'll assume that's what it is.
Interestingly curled petals on that flower in the foreground. Are the other yellow flowers part of the same plant? They look like a yellow Mariposa, genus Calorchtus. Lots of those in CA, but it could be C. luteus? http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=CALU9
