Field Notes

Description:

The tufted duck is a medium sized diving duck common in the UK. This species, like many other birds, exhibit strong sexual dimorphism. The female (seen in the picture) is unicolour brown with yellow eyes, while the male is a much more stunning black and white colouration. Both male and female have tufts on the top of their head.

Notes:

Here seen with ducklings. I did could not spot a tuft at all on this female which makes me question the ID.

Thanks Daniele, I thought this was the case. However I have seen the females of this species where the tuft is atleast visible. This one might have had a wet head though, leaving the feathers stuck down!
Elsa you may be right on the ID as the female tufted duck has hardly any tuft compared to the male.
