On further research, I think it is V. baldwini. Thanks StirredMocha.

You are likely correct about the genus but I don't think it looks like V. baldwinii in the leaves. http://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/western-ironweed-baldwin-s-ironweed Anyway, "There are 5 Vernonia species in Missouri, and they often hybridize, making identification tricky." :-)
Looks like an ironweed (Vernonia sp.) but the leaves look a bit too rough on the surface. Perhaps V. baldwinii?
