Field Notes

Description:

Large Australian eagle. The females weigh between 3.2 and 5.3 kilograms (7.1 and 12 lb), while the smaller males weigh 2 to 4 kilograms (4.4 to 8.8 lb)

Habitat:

Wedge-tails are found throughout Australia, including Tasmania, and southern New Guinea in almost all habitats, though they tend to be more common in lightly timbered and open country in southern and eastern Australia.

Great "head shot". Eagles have such intense eyes. I've been seeing them a lot lately, usually in pairs, and usually being dogged by some other birds. We only have 200 pairs of the sub-species Aquila audax fleayi in Tasmania, so either I'm seeing the same pair several times, or there are a few new pairs looking for territory.
