Field Notes

Description:

Large yellow flowers that only bloom when it is warm. You can tell what is happening weatherwise by watching them. Sometimes people get them mixed up with Alamanda. They can also be smaller in size and pink.

Habitat:

Tropical areas

Notes:

I like the new way of handling picture by making it a draft until it is finished. You saved me work today.

Yes that is what I thought they called Mandevilla, that is probably where all the trouble started. But it is not a vine. You either plant it against support, or tie it up if necessary. So I think you are right about the yellow being Alamanda.
By Purple Mandevilla do you mean the pink one? http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=mandevillea+plant&qpvt=mandevillea+plant&FORM=IGRE Or this, which is Purple allamanda? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allamanda_blanchetii The Mandevilleas are vines wheras the Allamandas are scandant , scrambling shrubs. The flower shapes of both Allamanda & Mandevillea are the same as they are closely related. If in doubt, you can bring me a piece of the plant when I get back.
Claire I had some purple Mandevilla in my Moon Garden and the shape of these yellow flowers is exactly the same. Even if you look at my Alamanda pictures in my spottings, I can see the difference. But your reference picture does look like my picture.
Alice, I think what you have is Dwarf Allamanda http://almostedenplants.com/mall/Dwarfallamanda.asp The yellow Mandevilla has more rounded leaves http://www.plant-care.com/mandevilla-yellow.html See what you think.
