Field Notes

Description:

This guy had hatched out less than a month ago, and he is the tiniest one I've ever seen! Tan body with dark blotches, two rows of fringe scales, and horns on the back of the head. There is a quarter in the last two photos for size comparison.

Habitat:

Found running around in a bare patch in short grass prairie.

Wow I can't believe you haven't seen one then! I haven't been out to Big Bend yet, but I've been to the Trans-pecos and have found many of these and roundtail horned lizards as well. I see quite a few in Palo Duro Canyon SP, it's just right down the road from me so I go often!
Actually I have been a seasonal park ranger at Big Bend, and my daughter lived in Alpine for 6 years so we went out there a lot - but I never saw one! I will have to head up to the Panhandle.
Head out to west or south Texas and they are pretty common! I'm at school right now in the panhandle and these guys are really easy to come by, but never tire of seeing them!
