Description:

Formerly known as "Variable Dancer," the Violet Dancer is classified as one of three subspecies of Variable Dancer damselflies. Related Resource: http://bugguide.net/node/view/584/tree Editor's Note: Hey kids, please don't try this yourself -- collecting specimens for observation is not allowed at Huntley Meadows Park. The damselfly shown in my photo is held by Mr. P.J. Dunn, a professional naturalist with the Resource Management Division, Fairfax County Park Authority. Disclaimer: No damselflies were injured or killed in the making of this photo. The gentleman in the photo background is holding a copy of "Dragonflies & Damselflies - An Introduction to Familiar, Widespread North American Species" -- a very handy pocket field guide to D&Ds, including the Variable Dancer: http://www.waterfordpress.com/index.php/component/option,com_catalog/id…

Habitat:

Huntley Meadows Park, a 1,425 acre wetland area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntley/
